"At first I wasn't clear what benefit I would derive from being involved with the local ASTD chapter. I stayed with it though on the simple belief that a vibrant, healthy professional association is a good thing in its own right. Then one day, my largest client asked me if I knew anybody that could help members of their highly educated workforce communicate more effectively. It was more about accent reduction and cultural assimilation than communication skills. Because I had become well-connected in NNJ-ASTD, I was able to bring a highly qualified specialist in to meet with them the following week! That certainly helped my credibility. Next, one of the speakers at a SIG asked me to meet with a colleague that needed consultants for a special project. Soon I was doing a substantial amount of work with this guy, and have been able to introduce him to yet another NNJ-ASTD colleague. The extra business couldn't have come at a better time! If I hadn't been involved with my local chapter, things would be very different for me now. That's what I'm talkin' about!"
