UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE & DENTISTRY OF NJ Newark, NJ 2001 – Present

A $1.1B institution of higher education consisting of schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, allied health and biomedical sciences.

Training Program Manager, Preventive Medicine Dept., NJ Medical School (2004 – Present)

Oversee all aspects of the NJ Preparedness Training Consortium’s operations including curriculum development, public relations, evaluation/assessment and delivery.  Reported to Project Director with a budget of $6M and 15 direct reports.

 
  • Designed and implemented an online data tracking system ensuring proper reporting to federal agencies supporting Presidential directives for national preparedness.
  • Assured 100% compliance with all state and federal guidelines while training 20,000 healthcare professionals in four years.
  • Reported training data to the US Department of Health & Human Services to assist with measuring the extent to which America’s health care workforce is competent and prepared to serve during a disaster.
  • Participated in a variety of national grantee meetings presenting and gathering “Best Practices” and “Lessons Learned” in order to incorporate into future preparedness activities.
  • Authored and delivered the School of Nursing’s first Bioethics curriculum.
  • Chaired a statewide workgroup charged with integrating ethical and legal issues into NJ counter-terrorism and preparedness education, which yielded a standard set of learning objectives that are currently employed in all curricula taught by the Consortium.
 

Instructor, Health Systems and Policy Division, School Public Health (2001 – 2004)

Dual role as a faculty member responsible for teaching and advising public health students and qualitative evaluator of the NJ Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program reporting results to the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services.  Reported to Department Chair with a budget of $500K and 3 direct reports.

  • Resolved data collection issues by analyzing reports, interviewing key informants and synthesizing information, which resulted in the creation of standardized reporting mechanisms, higher levels of consistency and greater data integrity.
  • Identified the Tobacco Control Unit’s educational gaps and streamlined the communication process, which supported timely policy development and implementation.
  • Developed process, implementation and outcome evaluation strategies for policy-based funding initiatives.

Health Policy Researcher, Community Health Studies Department, School of Public Health

Responsible for conducting research on state and local tobacco control policy making and presenting/publishing results.  Reported to Project Director with a budget of $800K.

 
  • Designed and conducted key informant interviews and examined legislation, tobacco industry document archives and other sources resulting in publications in three peer reviewed journals.
  • Presented research results to colleagues via professional conferences and to the public via interviews with television, radio and print media, which raised awareness and added clarity to public discourse.
  • Advised tobacco control advocates on policy development and implementation strategies.  Also testified in several hearings on behalf of tobacco control initiatives.
